What is Leadership?

What is Leadership ? It's one of the most essential questions whether you're studying leadership theory or being involved in leadership. From the very basics of how we've set up this website you can tell exactly what we think but in this section we'll explore various factors and identifying markers.

Take a moment and think to yourself - what is leadership ? how do YOU define influence in your life. Its not magical or deeply spiritual but practical - in wich ways would you describe it?

I think leadership comes from integrity – that you do whatever you ask others to do. I think there are non-obvious ways to lead. Just by providing a good example as a parent, a friend, a neighbor makes it possible for other people to see better ways to do things. Leadership does not need to be a dramatic, fist in the air and trumpets blaring, activity.

Other peoples descriptions: What is Leadership ?

The best way to investigate this question is to hear others descriptions. I once took part in a forum which spent 2 hours trying to pin down a phrase which accurately described what we, as leaders, wanted to define ourselves as. Lets explore a few...

  • Leadership: the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. Dwight D. Eisenhower.
  • As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others. Bill Gates.
  • Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. Steve Jobs.
  • The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already. John Buchan.
  • I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people. Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. Peter Drucker.
  • Effective leadership is putting first things first. Effective management is discipline, carrying it out. Stephen Covey.

Which one of these is correct? - Possibly all of them. The question what is leadership ? is answered in almost all answers to this complex question. We stand primarily with John Maxwell and his position that leadership is influence. The truth is that leadership cannot be boxed. It involves so much that we cannot answer this question precisely, except to say we are open to suggestions!

Leadership starts with you: personal influence and carries on to team influence. Along the way and past that; there are so many areas of leadership to explore and we are so excited to do that for YOU!
