The 'Avengers Leadership Movie' is every geeks and comic-book-follower's ideal movie, full of good versus-evil with some of the best superheros bought together to feature in this blockbuster. Despite the big names and amazing special effects, a huge drawing factor for me was the diversity and team dynamic that needed to be created. Although again this is just a movie - leadership plays a significant role.
We all have teams of unique and individual people (although not many with super-powers!) how do we bring these people together to serve their purpose? We'll explore this throughout this article on the Avengers leadership movie.
The Avengers movie is based on one of Marvel Comics best sellers. The story brings together other superheroes and comic book characters to become one team under super-leader Nick Fury. The group are assembled to fight a battle which they alone can win for humanity. Despite their various differences, the Hulk, Ironman and Captain America along with the others come together to form The Avengers.
The bad guy in this Movie is Thor's brother Loki, who comes to earth with a plan to conquer its inhabitants and steal an elusive object. The threat is greater than the earth has seen before and its fate in the hands of a special group of people bought together under one banner. Will they come together and defeat the evil which faces the earth?
Nick Fury: There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, so when we needed them, they could fight the battles that we never could...
Steve Rogers: All right, listen up! Until we can close that portal up there, what we need is containment. Barton: I want you on that roof, eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark: you've got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out, you turn it back or you turn it to ash. Thor: you've gotta try and bottleneck that portal, slow them down. You've got the lightning - light the bastards up!
Tony Stark: Let's do a head count here: your brother the demi-god; a super soldier, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend; a man with breath-taking anger management issues; a couple of master assassins, and YOU, big fella, you've managed to piss off every single one of them.
Loki: Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity, that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, for identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel.
Tony Stark: Yeah. That's just a preview, this will be opening night. Loki's a full-tilt diva. He wants flowers, he wants parades, he wants a monument built in the skies with his name plastered...
Bruce Banner: In case you needed to kill me, but you can't! I know! I tried!... I got low. I didn't see an end, so I put a bullet in my mouth... and the other guy spit it out! So I moved on. I focused on helping other people. I was good, until you dragged me back into this freak show and put everyone here at risk!
Nick Fury: How desperate am I? You threaten my world with war. You steal a force you can't hope to control. You talk about peace and you kill 'cause it's fun. You have made me VERY desperate. You might not be glad that you did.
The Avengers Leadership Movie: Leadership Development Lessons
This movie is packed full of takeaway leadership lessons. I would strongly suggest using this movie in a team-building environment due to its high-quality movieness and leadership scenarios. We want to focus in on team-dynamics due to the central theme picked up whilst watching this movie was that of diversity among community. The Avengers Leadership movie is basically about teamwork!
1. Don't be afraid of diversity and individuality.
Although you may not have to control the Hulk, you may have someone who has an anger problem! You may not have to bring Ironman into line, but you may have to work with a egotistical team-mate. The truth really is that every team will have all sorts of people involved, you as a leader shouldn't be overwhelmed by this but excited for a new challenge and adventure ahead!
2. Use peoples strengths rather than forcing them into relying on weaknesses.
I once listened to a talk on playing to your strengths which basically summed this up by saying that you should rely on the strengths you bring to the table. All of the Avengers had particular abilities and when they were all bought together that's all they could give. Find your teams strengths and allow them to play a part in which they can use them as foundations to bring better success all around.
3. Be willing to put things aside in times of difficulty.
I love the moment in the Avengers leadership movie when they're all sat around arguing about conspiracies, differences and cultural confrontations. They think that Nick Fury has a bad agenda and they're not sure whether what they're doing is right or not and suddenly the ship gets attached and none of that matters anymore. It's ok to talk and confront each other, its even healthy! but when something needs to get done the team need to put aside their differences and come together to achieve the goals and find the ultimate success of every team.
